Starting a Chaos Lich Witch in Path of Exile 2 feels good because the build gets moving before you've found anything fancy. You're not waiting for one perfect unique or some rare late-game setup. A few sensible caster pieces, a steady supply of PoE 2 Currency for small upgrades, and the Essence Drain plus Contagion package can carry a lot of the early campaign. The playstyle is simple enough, too. Tag the pack, fire Essence Drain into the right target, then watch the infection jump as enemies drop.
Why Essence Drain and Contagion feel so clean
The reason this pairing works so well is that it rewards good targeting, not frantic button mashing. Contagion puts a chaos damage-over-time effect on enemies and creates the spread mechanic that makes the screen clear itself. Essence Drain is the heavier hit for tougher monsters, rares, and early bosses. You'll quickly notice that casting Contagion first, then landing Essence Drain on a central enemy, saves time and mana. It also keeps you safer, because you don't have to stand still for long. That matters a lot while levelling, especially when your gear is still a bit rough.
Early skills that smooth out awkward fights
The build doesn't have to live on two buttons. Early utility makes a big difference. Entangle is useful when packs rush you or when a boss keeps closing the gap. It gives you a little breathing room, and sometimes that's all you need. Bonestorm is worth adding once it becomes available, since it gives you a channelled physical option while your chaos damage is ticking. It's handy against stubborn enemies that don't fall over from the first spread. Orb of Storms can stay on the bar as well if you like extra hits and small trigger value. Don't overcomplicate it, though. Keep the core rotation comfortable first.
Support gems and gear worth checking
For damage-over-time skills, Swift Affliction is one of the first supports that really feels noticeable. The shorter duration can sound annoying on paper, but in practice you're moving from pack to pack so fast that the extra damage is usually worth it. If you're using Bonestorm or another hitting skill, Corrosion can help by letting poison pressure enemy armour, which is nice against bulkier targets. On gear, look for spell damage, maximum mana, cast speed, and mana regeneration. A caster off-hand like a Woven Focus is exactly the sort of item you should check vendors for. Energy shield bases are also easy to justify, since they fit the Witch naturally and keep you from getting clipped by random hits.
Passive tree choices that actually matter
When you start moving through the passive tree, don't wander too much. The build wants chaos damage, skill effect duration, and enough resource support to keep casting without feeling starved. Lingering Horror is a strong early target because it pushes both chaos damage and duration, which helps Essence Drain and Contagion at the same time. That's the sort of node that makes your setup feel more stable instead of just adding a tiny number somewhere. After that, route with purpose toward Demonic Possession. Unlocking Demon Form is the point where the character starts to feel like a real Lich rather than just a Witch using chaos spells.
Keeping the campaign pace steady
The best version of this levelling plan is practical. Upgrade often, don't hoard every low-level item, and fix weak slots before they become a problem. If your mana feels bad, solve that first. If bosses take too long, improve links or grab more chaos scaling. Some players use trading or u4gm PoE 2 Currency options to speed up early gearing, but even with basic drops the build has a clear path forward. Play around the spread, keep moving, and let damage over time do the work while you stay out of trouble.
